Fort Frouard, Military fortress in Champigneulles, France.
Fort Frouard is a hexagonal fortification located on the Haie plateau near Champigneulles, standing at 350 meters elevation. The structure features stone masonry walls reinforced with concrete and is surrounded by defensive ditches on all sides.
Construction took place between 1879 and 1883 following the loss of Alsace-Lorraine, positioning this fort as part of a larger defense network along the Franco-German border. It served as one of many fortifications built across the region to deter potential invasions.
The fort represents French military engineering of the late 19th century through its design, which includes artillery turrets, observation posts, and armored shelters.
The site is accessible via a walking path that begins from the village and leads to the fort's entrance. A local association manages visits and provides information about the structure's military features and layout.
The fort still retains its original Mougin artillery turret along with three machine gun turrets and a 75mm gun turret. These preserved weapons systems make it a rare example of French fortifications that kept their original defensive equipment.
