Iowa State Capitol, Government building in Des Moines, US
The Iowa State Capitol is a government building in Des Moines, Iowa, with five copper domes, including a central golden dome rising 84 meters (275 feet) above ground. Inside the main dome is a glass floor allowing views several stories below.
Construction began in 1871 using limestone, brick, and granite, finishing in 1886 after 15 years of work. Craftsmen followed the Renaissance Revival style popular in public buildings of that era.
Inside, the walls display 29 different types of marble from around the world, visible on staircases, columns, and wall panels. Visitors also see Civil War battle flags and paintings displayed throughout the corridors and rotundas.
Free guided tours run Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM at 1007 East Grand Avenue. The rotunda and lower floors are wheelchair accessible, while the dome is reached by stairs.
The central dome was covered with 100 ounces of 23.5 karat gold leaf during a 1999 restoration. Craftsmen spent several months applying the thin gold layers to the curved surface.
