Elmont is a community in Nassau County, sitting directly along the border with Queens. The area spreads across several residential zones with single-family homes and small commercial centers along the main roads.
The area was established in 1650 as Foster's Meadow when the Foster family acquired land here for livestock farming. In the nineteenth century, additional families from surrounding boroughs settled and developed the community further.
The neighborhood today draws residents from many backgrounds who have moved here from different parts of the metropolitan area. Local shops and restaurants along the main streets reflect the diversity of the community.
The Long Island Rail Road serves the community with a station offering connections to New York City and surrounding areas. Roads such as Hempstead Turnpike run through the area and make it easy to navigate by car.
Belmont Park, a well-known horse racing track from 1905, sits within the community boundaries and regularly draws visitors. The UBS Arena next door has served as home to the New York Islanders hockey team since opening.
