Chimney Rock State Park sits in Rutherford County, North Carolina, protecting a granite outcrop that rises 315 feet (96 meters) above the valley floor. The view extends across forested mountains and the lake below, while waterfalls tumble down through the gorge.
The Morse family ran this site as a private park from 1902 until the state took over in 2007. The purchase secured lasting protection for the rock walls and waterfalls.
Visitors reach the overlook either by trail or through the elevator, built into the rock as early as 1949. Many hikers recognize scenes from the 1992 film as they walk through the gorge.
Several trails wind through the park, some steep and rocky, others easier to walk. Visitors who prefer not to hike can take the elevator to the summit and step directly onto the viewing platform.
Hickory Nut Falls drops over 404 feet (123 meters) and ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the eastern part of North America. Few falls east of the Rockies match that height.
