Hickory Nut Falls, 404-foot waterfall in Chimney Rock State Park, North Carolina
Hickory Nut Falls is a waterfall in a state park in North Carolina where water cascades over multiple layers of granite rock. The rock face drops approximately 404 feet total and is surrounded by dense forest, with several viewing spots along the hiking trail.
The area around the waterfall was long managed by the Morse family before North Carolina state took over the land in 2007. This transfer made the site accessible to the public for regular visits.
The waterfall became well-known after appearing in the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans, particularly during the dramatic final scene. Visitors can still recognize the filming locations when they come here today.
The trail to the base of the falls is moderately challenging and takes about one hour for the 1.5-mile round-trip walk. Good footwear is important since the path can be wet and slippery in places.
The site supports specialized plants and amphibians that thrive in the constantly cool and moist environment. These rare species are adapted to the specific conditions found only in such damp locations.
