Christopher Newport University is a public institution in the port city of Newport News in southeastern Virginia. The grounds cover 105 hectares with contemporary academic structures, residence buildings, and the Ferguson Center for the Arts, where more than 4500 students are enrolled.
The institution began in 1960 as a branch of the College of William and Mary and became an independent university in 1992. The grounds were acquired in 1964 and evolved from a regional extension site into a full college.
The university carries the name of a 17th-century English captain who brought settlers to Virginia. Students connect their daily routines with this regional colonial history, visible in street names and building designations across the grounds.
