Causey's Mill, Gristmill in Newport News, US

Causey's Mill is a gristmill in Newport News housed in a two-story white wood building that overlooks Lake Maury. The interior contains original wooden milling machinery, including millstones and a hurst frame used to process grain.

William Causey built this mill in 1866 after the Civil War, creating one of only two surviving historic mills between the James and York Rivers. The structure has endured and is now maintained by the City of Newport News.

The mill reflects Virginia's agricultural traditions, where grain from local farms was ground into flour for nearby communities. This work formed the backbone of rural life in the region.

The building is accessible for visitors who want to examine the historical milling equipment and architecture on display. The lakeside location also makes it a pleasant spot for a walk along the water.

Inside, you can see a 20-inch Leffel Turbine Wheel from when the mill operated, along with original cast iron spindles and stone-lifting tools still in their original positions. This equipment reveals the technology that once powered the grinding process.
