James A. Fields House, Historic residence in East End, Newport News, United States.

The James A. Fields House features a two-story red brick structure with an entrance tower, low pitched hipped roof, and tall two-over-two windows.

Built in 1897, this Renaissance Revival residence belonged to James A. Fields, Virginia's first Black judicial officer who graduated from Hampton University in 1871.

The building temporarily served as Whittaker Memorial Hospital, the first medical facility for Black residents in Newport News during the early 1900s.

Located at 617 27th Street in Newport News, the property maintains restricted access as it remains a private residence visible from public areas.

Fields operated his law practice from this residence while teaching legal theories to young Black students and serving in the Virginia General Assembly.
