Newport News Victory Arch, Triumphal arch in Newport News, United States.
Description
The Newport News Victory Arch is a triumphal arch at the intersection of 25th Street and West Avenue featuring classical architectural details. An eternal bronze flame sits atop the structure as a symbol of remembrance.
History
The monument was built in 1919 to honor nearly half a million American soldiers who returned through the Newport News port after World War I. A major reconstruction took place in 1962 to preserve the historic structure for future generations.
Culture
The arch displays an inscription honoring those who returned home and those who did not come back from war. These words remain visible and show how the community wanted to express both joy and sorrow for what people experienced.
Practical
The monument sits at a central intersection downtown and is easy to reach and view from the street. Limited parking is available nearby, so plan extra time for arrival and parking.
Did you know?
The original brick, wood, and stucco structure needed more maintenance costs over the decades than its initial construction spent. This problem eventually led to a complete rebuild using more lasting materials.
