Valley Stream is a community in Nassau County on Long Island, covering an area of about 3.5 square miles (nine square kilometers) and home to over forty thousand residents according to the 2020 census. The place sits on the southern edge of the county and borders Queens, putting the boundary with New York City within easy reach.
The Dutch West India Company purchased the land from the Rockaway people in 1640 and began European settlement in the region. Robert Pagan gave the area its current name in the mid-1800s, when smaller settlements spread here and the first infrastructure took shape.
The area is home to several school districts, and many facilities have become gathering points for families from different backgrounds over the years. These schools and community centers play a central role in daily life for many residents who enroll their children here and take part in local programs.
The Long Island Rail Road operates several stations within the area, offering direct links to Manhattan and other destinations across Nassau County. Drivers will find a network of roads connecting the community with neighboring towns and nearby New York City boroughs.
The area served as a filming location for several scenes in the late 1980s movie Goodfellas, which gave it a degree of recognition among film enthusiasts. It is also the birthplace of the Snapple Beverage Company, which later became one of the most recognizable drink brands in the United States.
