This congressional district covers parts of southwestern Chicago and nearby suburbs in Cook County and DuPage County, including several traditional neighborhoods along the city limits. The area stretches from the Chicago Loop southward through densely settled residential blocks to outer suburban communities.
The district was established in 1833 following the 1830 Census and originally covered large portions of northern and western Illinois. Boundary changes in 1873 shifted its focus to areas in and around Chicago.
The district population of 720,148 residents represents multiple ethnic groups, with 47.3% Hispanic, 39.1% White, 6.1% Asian, and 4.6% Black communities.
