Twin Oaks Community, Intentional community in Louisa County, Virginia, US
Twin Oaks is a residential community on 450 acres in Virginia where roughly 100 people live together and share their responsibilities. The residents make decisions collectively and manage their shared resources to build a life based on common values.
The community began in 1967 as an experimental project where people wanted to rethink how to live together. It grew from early struggles into one of North America's largest secular intentional communities.
Residents share work fairly across farming, craft production, and other tasks, creating a daily rhythm where everyone contributes to the community's needs. This practice of shared labor shapes how people interact and view their role in the group.
The grounds are spread out, so good walking shoes are helpful if you want to explore the property. It is best to reach out ahead of time to learn when visits are possible and what you might see during your time there.
The community funds itself through several business operations: it produces tofu, manufactures hammocks, and provides book indexing services for publishers. All earnings from these activities go back into the community fund to support all residents.
