Sleeping Giant, Nature reserve in Wallingford, United States.
Sleeping Giant is a nature reserve in Connecticut that covers a mountain range formed from volcanic rock. The cliffs and wooded slopes stretch through the terrain, creating a network of paths leading to overlooks.
Quarries threatened the mountain profile in the early 20th century, prompting local residents to protect the area. Since then the site has remained open to visitors while its surroundings have stayed largely unchanged.
The name comes from a profile visible from the south that suggests a figure lying on its back. This shape has become a familiar landmark for people in the area, who watch the silhouette while driving or walking.
The trails vary in length and grade, making both shorter outings and longer hikes possible. Sturdy footwear helps on rocky sections, and bringing enough water is advised.
Different elevations and rock formations create small climate zones where plants and animals live that are otherwise rare in the area. This variety makes some walks more interesting because vegetation and birdlife change over short distances.
