Richford, human settlement in Tioga County, New York, United States of America
Richford is a town in the northeastern part of Tioga County, New York, set on hilly terrain. Two branches of Owego Creek flow through the area, and state forests cover much of the land.
Ezekiel Rich settled the area in 1821, making gloves and mittens and donating land for the town square. The settlement was officially formed as Arlington in 1831 and renamed Richford in 1832, after which sawmills, flour mills, and potato farms shaped the local economy for generations.
Every September, the town hosts a Potato Festival where local crafts, storytelling, and food like potato donuts bring people together. The event reflects how the community keeps its farming past alive through shared gatherings.
The area has hiking trails through state forests, including the Finger Lakes Trail, which has a lean-to shelter near the county line. Water access to Owego Creek is easiest near State Route 79, and the terrain works well for outdoor activities in all seasons.
John D. Rockefeller was born in Richford and, as a young man, reportedly handed out dimes to passersby at the local Bert Rawley store. A marker in the state forest notes the site of his birth and also honors his grandfather, who ran a mill nearby.
