Patterson Park

Patterson Park is a public park in Southeast Baltimore covering 137 acres with open fields, mature trees, and paved walkways throughout. The grounds feature athletic fields, two lakes, and numerous recreational facilities for visitors to enjoy.

The elevated ground at Hampstead Hill within the park served as a defensive position for American forces during the 1812 Battle of Baltimore. This strategic location made it a key battlefield during that conflict.

The Observatory built in 1891 combines Asian architectural features with its role as a viewing tower offering perspectives across the city.

The Virginia S. Baker Recreation Center provides spaces for community programs and sports activities throughout the year. The park has multiple entrances and visitor areas, so explore different sections based on your interests.

The park started in 1827 with six acres donated by merchant William Patterson and grew through multiple land purchases over time. This expansion shows how a small private donation developed into a large public space for the entire community.
