Elon University, Private university in Elon, North Carolina, United States.
Elon University is a private institution of higher education in Elon, North Carolina, bringing together six schools under one roof. The grounds spread across more than 265 hectares (656 acres) with lakes, fountain installations, and different residential neighborhoods grouped around teaching buildings.
Founded in 1889 as Elon College by the Christian Connection, a religious community in North Carolina. After a fire in 1923, the entire campus rose again with brick buildings and revised spatial planning.
The name derives from the Hebrew word for oak tree, and these trees still shape the entire campus with their shade and presence. Students walk between buildings along shaded paths lined by these namesake trees that give the grounds their particular character.
The campus is easy to explore on foot, with different schools and residential areas connected by walkways. Visitors should note that January is often reserved for a special teaching program, and activities on the grounds may be organized differently during that month.
More than eight out of ten undergraduate students come from outside North Carolina, giving the campus a nationwide and international character. This composition shows in daily life through the variety of accents, habits, and perspectives on the paths between lecture halls.
