Alumni Gym, University sports arena in Elon, United States
Alumni Gym is an indoor sports facility on the campus of Elon University in Elon, North Carolina, used mainly for basketball and volleyball. The building centers on Robertson Court, its main playing floor, and has seating for spectators on the sides.
The building opened on January 14, 1950, and quickly became a central part of the university's sports life. In 1992, the seating, flooring, and cooling systems were all updated to bring the facility up to date.
Robertson Court, the main floor of the gym, draws students and staff together during basketball and volleyball games throughout the season. The energy in the room during a home game gives a clear sense of how much sport matters to life at Elon University.
Access to the gym is generally tied to university membership or event attendance, so it is worth checking in advance whether the building is open on the day you plan to visit. Arriving around game time gives the best chance of seeing the space as it is normally used.
Inside the building, there is an indoor driving range where university members can practice their golf swing year-round. It is an unexpected feature for a facility that is otherwise known for court sports.
