Acquavella Galleries

Acquavella Galleries occupies a five-story French neo-classical townhouse at 18 East 79th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. The space blends the elegance of a historic building with contemporary gallery rooms designed for rotating art exhibitions.

The gallery was founded in 1921 and initially focused on Italian Renaissance paintings for American collectors and museums. This foundation in classical art shaped the gallery's character throughout subsequent decades.

The gallery presents works spanning Impressionism to contemporary art, featuring both well-known and emerging artists across different periods. Visitors experience a range of styles and artistic perspectives that developed over more than a century.

In 1990, the gallery acquired the Pierre Matisse Gallery collection through a partnership with auction house Sotheby's. This acquisition brought together more than 2,300 works and significantly expanded the gallery's reach.
