Altgeld Gardens Homes, Public housing complex in Riverdale, Chicago
Altgeld Gardens is a residential complex with approximately 2,000 two-story brick townhouses arranged across expansive grounds with curved streets and landscaped areas. Each unit features front and rear outdoor spaces, giving the development a distinctive character.
This complex was built in 1945 to house African American veterans returning from World War II. The project represented an early attempt by government to provide affordable housing for underserved communities.
The community center here offers educational programs and support services that shape daily life for residents. These resources create gathering spaces where families connect and find assistance.
The residential area is accessible to visitors, and daytime is best for exploring when community facilities are active. Wear comfortable shoes since the grounds are expansive and walking is necessary to see the layout.
The area became a focal point for environmental activism in the 1980s when a community leader launched campaigns against industrial pollution surrounding the neighborhood. This grassroots work made the area a model for civic engagement on environmental justice issues.
