American Club, United States historic place
The American Club is a large hotel in Wisconsin built in the style of old English houses that originally served as worker housing for the Kohler factory in 1918. The property contains 241 rooms and 28 suites spread across several buildings, featuring multiple restaurants, a spa with water-based treatments, four golf courses, and recreation areas including hiking trails, canoeing, and a private 500-acre wilderness preserve.
The building was constructed in 1918 as worker housing for the Kohler factory and sat unused for many years until Herb Kohler, grandson of the company founder, converted it into a hotel in 1981. Since then the property has been continuously expanded with additional rooms and facilities to become a major resort destination.
The hotel reflects its worker history through architectural details and naming choices that remain visible to guests today. Visitors experience this connection in the crafted dining spaces, historical portraits, and traditions like The Immigrant restaurant, which celebrates local ingredients and regional heritage.
The property provides complimentary shuttle service between the main buildings and recreation areas to help guests navigate easily. Some areas feature stairs, so visitors with mobility concerns may prefer the Carriage House, which has a simpler layout.
The greenhouse with stained glass windows was brought from Europe by Herb Kohler and now serves as a cafe with coffee, pastries, and house-made ice cream. Select afternoons feature complimentary tea service, offering guests an unexpected chance to relax.
