Area codes 847 and 224, Telephone prefix in northern Chicago suburbs, US
Area codes 847 and 224 cover the northern suburbs of Chicago in northeastern Illinois, including Lake County, northern Cook County, northern Kane County, and parts of McHenry County. Both codes serve the same geographic area and allow callers to reach landlines and mobile phones in this region.
The 847 prefix was created in January 1996 when area code 708 was divided into three separate regions. The 224 overlay was introduced in 2002 to meet the growing demand for telephone numbers in this area.
The telephone codes connect numerous municipalities including Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Mount Prospect, and Schaumburg into one communication network.
Callers from outside the United States dial the country code +1 followed by the ten-digit number including the prefix. Businesses and individuals can obtain numbers with either code through telephone service providers.
This region hosted the first telephone number pooling trial in the United States in June 1998. The trial aimed to prevent central office code exhaustion and distribute available numbers more efficiently.
