Asticou Azalea Garden, Japanese garden in Northeast Harbor, United States.
Asticou Azalea Garden is a Japanese-style park near Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert. The grounds feature stone lanterns, wooden bridges, ponds, and carefully selected azaleas and trees arranged along winding walking paths that connect different garden areas.
A gardener founded the site in 1956 with backing from a wealthy local patron. The garden preserves plants that came from a nearby estate that was no longer maintained as a garden.
The garden blends Japanese design traditions with the coastal landscape of New England. Visitors notice how plants and paths fit together carefully to create a balanced and calming setting.
The site sits on gently sloping ground that is easy to explore on foot, with well-maintained paths of reasonable width. Plan for two to three hours to walk through all the areas, and wear comfortable shoes suitable for outdoor terrain.
The garden holds a rare collection of Japanese iris and azalea varieties not commonly found at other locations in the country. The flowering sequence stretches across several months, with each season bringing different plant groups into bloom.
