Baltimore Grand, building in Maryland, United States
The Baltimore Grand is a seven-story bank building on Charles Street in Baltimore, originally opened in 1869 as a Masonic Lodge hall. It combines French and Italian architectural styles and features a marble staircase, colored stained glass windows, ornate plaster moldings, and rosette-shaped chandeliers throughout its spaces.
The Baltimore Masonic Lodge was founded in 1822 and occupied this building starting in 1869 after the cornerstone was laid in 1866. It survived three major fires in 1890 and around 1900, and served as a gathering and support center during World War I and II.
The building was originally founded as a Masonic Lodge called the Grand Lodge of Maryland. Inside, different rooms feature cultural design elements like Tudor and Egyptian motifs that visitors encounter throughout their visit.
The building is located near the harbor and downtown area, making it easily accessible on foot. Visitors can appreciate the detailed stonework and features from the entrance, and the interior spaces are spacious yet welcoming with an elevator for accessibility.
The building faced threats of demolition in the late 20th century but was carefully restored in the early 2000s, recovering much of its original character. The Masonic organization occupied it from 1869 until 1994, when it was transformed into an events venue.
