The battlefield extends across a valley between Lehigh Hill and Turkey Hill, covering 365 acres of land in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
The Battle of Rhode Island occurred on August 29, 1778, when American Continental Army forces under Major General John Sullivan confronted British troops near Newport.
The 1st Rhode Island Regiment, which included African American and Native American soldiers, defended Turkey Hill against three British attacks during the battle.
The battlefield location provides interpretive signs and markers that detail the events of the American Revolutionary War engagement and troop movements.
This battlefield marks the sole major Revolutionary War engagement in Rhode Island and represents the first French-American military collaboration of the conflict.
