Big Blue Bug, Commercial fiberglass termite statue on I-95, Providence, US.
Big Blue Bug is a massive blue fiberglass termite sculpture mounted along Interstate 95 in Providence, roughly 58 feet (18 meters) long and 9 feet (3 meters) tall. It was originally painted purple and serves as an advertisement for a regional pest control company.
The sculpture was built in 1980 by the Avenia Sign Company and was initially painted purple to reflect the color of swarming termites viewed under a microscope. It has remained at the highway location ever since, becoming a fixture of the regional landscape.
The structure was named Nibbles Woodaway through a public naming contest in 1990, giving the fiberglass termite a personality that locals and travelers recognize instantly. It has become a visual landmark that represents the company's local roots and sense of humor.
The structure sits along Interstate 95 and is clearly visible from passing vehicles without requiring an exit or parking. The best view of the figure appears when driving in the southbound direction.
During special occasions and holidays, the structure receives decorative additions, such as a surgical mask worn during the 2020 pandemic. These seasonal touches give the landmark a playful quality that shifts throughout the years.
