Brick Block, Wohn- und Geschäftshaus in Massachusetts

The Brick Block is a 1914 commercial building in Chatham, Massachusetts, designed in Tudor Revival style with decorative brickwork and dormers. The structure features ground-floor shops and upper-level residences, combining retail and residential functions in a single brick facade with traditional wooden trim and brackets.

Built in 1914 by stockbroker Charles Hardy and his partners, the Brick Block initially housed offices for the newly formed Chatham Trust Company. The site was previously known as Post Office Square and became the center of the town's expanding business district.

The Brick Block served as a gathering place and commercial hub for the community, with its mixed-use design bringing together shops, offices, and residences under one roof. The succession of different businesses inside reveals how daily life and local needs shifted over more than a century.

The Brick Block sits on Main Street in downtown Chatham and is easily accessible on foot as part of a walking tour through town. The exterior can be viewed at any time without restrictions, making it convenient for visitors exploring the historic district.

Master bricklayer Joseph Nickerson, who came from Worcester to construct the building, created the decorative brickwork patterns that give the structure its distinctive appearance. His family settled in the area and continued the masonry trade for generations afterward.
