Brooks Astronomical Observatory

Brooks Astronomical Observatory, Astronomical observatory at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, United States

Brooks Astronomical Observatory is an astronomical facility at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant with a 16-inch computer-controlled Cassegrain reflector telescope made by DFM Engineering. This equipment serves scientific observation and research purposes on campus.

This facility opened in 1964 on the roof of Brooks Hall and was named after Kendall P. Brooks, who taught astronomy at the university from 1910 to 1947. The naming honored an influential educator from the institution's early years.

Monthly public viewing sessions started in 1976 let local residents observe celestial objects and learn about space through guided presentations. Visitors can experience the night sky together and connect with people who share a passion for astronomy.

The observatory is located on a university campus, and guests should check ahead for public viewing times since it primarily serves research purposes. Visiting on clear nights yields better results for seeing celestial objects.

The telescope is used for specialized measurements including timing lunar occultations and tracking asteroids and comets with precision. These scientific contributions help expand knowledge about our solar system.
