Broad Street Market, Historic farmers' market in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Broad Street Market is a working farmers market in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, housed in neoclassical stone and brick buildings along Verbeke Street. The market has both indoor stalls and outdoor spaces where vendors sell fresh food, local produce, and other goods.
The market opened in 1860 to supply Union soldiers at a nearby camp during the Civil War, and the stone building was finished in 1863. New sections were added over the following decades, and the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Amish and Mennonite vendors have sold here for generations, and their presence still shapes the feeling of the market today. Many shoppers come not just to buy food but to meet neighbors and take part in the steady rhythm of a weekly tradition.
The market is busiest in the morning, when vendors are fully set up and the selection is at its best. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as the space covers several blocks with both indoor and outdoor areas to walk through.
At its peak in the 1920s, the market had over 725 vendors, and many waited years just to get an indoor spot. A fire in 2023 caused major damage, and some vendors have been selling from temporary tents nearby while restoration work continues.
