Buffalo Main Light

Buffalo Main Light is an octagonal limestone tower standing at the entrance to Buffalo Harbor on Lake Erie. The 18-meter-tall structure was equipped with a Fresnel lens to guide vessels safely through the harbor waters.

The original light at this site dated to 1818, but was replaced in 1833 by the structure that stands today. This new tower was built to support growing maritime traffic as Buffalo emerged as a major Great Lakes port.

The lighthouse represents the maritime identity of Buffalo and its connection to Great Lakes shipping routes that shaped the city's growth. Walking around it, you sense the ongoing importance of this landmark to local waterfront traditions and heritage.

The lighthouse sits near the United States Coast Guard Station and welcomes visitors during the warmer months. The Buffalo Lighthouse Association arranges tours that give you access to this historic location.

The original Fresnel lens from the lighthouse now resides in the Buffalo History Museum, where visitors can view this piece of engineering. This lens was essential for navigation during the height of shipping activity on the lake.
