Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area, Wildlife management area in Hanson and Halifax, Massachusetts, United States.
Burrage Pond Wildlife Management Area is a protected space in Hanson and Halifax featuring ponds, marshes, swamps, and former cranberry farms connected by a network of walking trails. The diverse water environments and overgrown agricultural areas create varied habitats throughout the site.
The land was originally called Great Cedar Swamp before Albert C. Burrage began peat extraction there in 1905. It was later converted to cranberry farming and eventually became the protected wildlife area it is today.
The area takes its name from Albert C. Burrage, the businessman who shaped the land in the early 20th century. Today, visitors use the trails and waterways for bird watching and outdoor activities.
You can enter the area through multiple points on Elm Street and Pleasant Street with parking available at the main entrances. The walking trails are easy to navigate and suitable for different activity levels.
The site holds one of the largest retired cranberry bog systems, now functioning as wetland habitat. This shift from farmed land to natural marsh shows how the space has evolved over decades.
