Central Methodist University is a private college in Fayette, Missouri, covering 55 acres with teaching buildings, dormitories, sports facilities, and the Morrison Observatory. The campus spreads across several building clusters connected by pathways and small green spaces.
The institution received its founding charter from the Missouri legislature in 1855 and opened classes in 1857 with 114 students and three instructors. During the Battle of Fayette in 1864, part of the fighting between Union troops and Southern forces took place across the present grounds.
The Ashby-Hodge Gallery on campus displays work by artists from the area and keeps records related to Methodist history. Visitors can walk through the exhibition rooms during opening hours and view the rotating collections.
The grounds can be explored on foot, and main pathways lead through the different areas with teaching halls, housing, and leisure facilities. Public spaces like the gallery and observatory can be visited at certain times.
Frank and Jesse James fought here in 1864 as part of the Southern forces before later becoming known as outlaws. Some remnants from the battle are still visible on campus today.
