Chesapeake Arboretum, Botanical garden in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Chesapeake Arboretum is a botanical garden spread across 48 acres of mature hardwood forest with more than 3 miles of walking trails throughout the grounds. The paths cross a stream via eleven bridges and pass through different forest areas and garden sections.
The main farmhouse dates to 1730, with significant additions built in 1822 during its time as part of the Williamson family property. These two construction phases reflect the property's development from an early settlement into a larger estate.
This space was once a private family estate and retains the character of that heritage as visitors walk through the grounds. The gardens and natural areas reflect how local families historically connected with the land and its resources.
The arboretum is open to visitors daily at no charge and offers accessible routes for those with mobility concerns. Parking for cars and group coaches is available throughout the grounds.
A 3-acre lake called Lake Hughes sits within the grounds and provides a water feature among the woodland trails. The site is also part of the American Camellia Trail, a network that celebrates these flowering plants across the region.
