Comfort Starr House, Colonial residence in Guilford, Connecticut, US.
Comfort Starr House is a colonial residence in Guilford built with a traditional saltbox design, featuring a steeply pitched roof and timber frame construction from the late 1600s. The wooden structure displays the craftsmanship and building techniques typical of that era.
The house was built in 1695 by Henry Kingsnorth and subsequently sold to Comfort Starr, a local tailor. It dates to the early colonial period when such wooden structures were being established throughout New England.
The house reflects how early New England settlers designed their homes and the building techniques they used. The saltbox shape was a practical solution for the region's harsh winters.
The house is located on State Street in Guilford and functions as a private residence with restricted access to the interior. Visitors can view the exterior architecture from the street, though entry inside is not permitted.
In 2014, scientific testing through tree-ring analysis confirmed the construction date and verified this building ranks among the oldest wooden houses in the United States. This research method provided precise evidence of the structure's age.
