Crown Candy Kitchen, Historic soda fountain and candy shop in Old North St. Louis, Missouri.
Crown Candy Kitchen is a soda fountain and candy shop in North St. Louis, Missouri, still fitted with its original early 20th-century furnishings. Long counter seats, antique signs, and an old cash register remain part of the working space.
The shop was opened in 1913 by Macedonian immigrants and has never closed since, making it the oldest continuously running soda fountain in St. Louis. It has stayed in the same family across several generations.
The chocolates are still made by hand using old molds brought from Europe, and visitors can sometimes watch the process from the counter. The decor, with its vintage signs and worn wooden booths, gives the place the feel of a different era.
The shop sits on St. Louis Avenue in the northern part of the city and is open Monday through Saturday. Arriving outside of midday rush hours is a good idea, as the counter and booths fill up fast.
There is a milkshake challenge where visitors attempt to finish five large portions in 30 minutes, and those who succeed get their names posted on a board inside the shop. This contest has been running for decades and draws people from well outside the neighborhood.
