Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge over Mississippi River in St. Louis, United States
The Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge is a cable-stayed crossing over the Mississippi River in St. Louis, extending 2,803 feet (854 m) and supported by two A-shaped towers that rise 435 feet (133 m) high. The structure links Missouri with Illinois and carries Interstate 70 across the river with four traffic lanes, while its design allows for future expansion to six lanes.
The crossing opened in 2014 as the first new span over the Mississippi in downtown St. Louis since the 1960s. Construction required an investment of roughly 695 million dollars and represented a major infrastructure addition for the region.
Named after baseball player Stan Musial, the crossing also honors military veterans through its official title. A plaque near the Missouri approach commemorates Andy Gammon, a construction worker who lost his life during the project.
The crossing carries Interstate 70 between Missouri and Illinois and remains open to vehicle traffic at all times. Pedestrians and cyclists cannot use the span, as it serves motor vehicles only.
The foundations were drilled into limestone bedrock to protect the structure against earthquakes. The entire steel framework required over 15,000 tons of structural steel plus an additional 8,600 tons of reinforcing steel.
