A surveyor named Aaron Higgenbotham discovered the cave in 1810 while surveying land in the Tennessee wilderness. The site later became explored and developed into a destination for guided visits and tours.

The Volcano Room serves as a natural concert venue where bluegrass performances take place regularly in front of the cave walls. Visitors experience live music shaped by the underground setting and its natural sound qualities.
