Tennessee, Southeastern state in United States

This southeastern state in the United States extends from the Appalachian range in the east to the Mississippi River in the west. The terrain includes forested mountain ridges, rolling valleys, flat agricultural plains, and wide river floodplains along the western edge.

The territory was admitted as the sixteenth state in 1796, after having been part of North Carolina and the Southwest Territory. The Civil War ran through the region, and numerous battles were fought here, leaving deep social and economic traces.

In Memphis, visitors can walk down Beale Street where live music pours from bars and clubs and the history of blues comes alive. Nashville shows traces of country music everywhere: songwriters perform in small pubs, and on the streets you often hear guitar sounds and spontaneous jam sessions.

Travelers find good infrastructure in the larger cities, while rural areas often require longer driving distances between sights. The climate is humid and warm in summer, so light clothing and sun protection are recommended for outdoor activities.

The Great Smoky Mountains form the most visited national park region in the country and receive over 12 million guests annually. Less known is that more tree species grow here than in all of Europe combined, making the forests an extraordinary natural laboratory.
