Morgan County spans 522 square miles across the Cumberland Mountains, containing forests, rivers, and numerous protected natural areas within its boundaries.
The county formed in 1817 from parts of Anderson and Roane counties, receiving its name from Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War commander.
German settlers established Wartburg in the 1840s, naming the settlement after a castle in Germany and creating the county's administrative center.
The county maintains several government offices in Wartburg, offering residents access to administrative services, law enforcement, and economic development programs.
A tornado in 2002 affected Morgan County's landscape, leading to significant changes in local emergency preparedness and community support systems.
