Ruby Falls, Subterranean waterfall in Chattanooga, United States.
Ruby Falls is a subterranean waterfall inside Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, dropping 145 feet through limestone chambers. The water flows through narrow crevices and collects in a pool at the base of the drop, while colored lights illuminate the wet rock faces.
Leo Lambert discovered the waterfall in 1928 while searching for a cave he owned after its entrance had been sealed for decades. He named the find after his wife Ruby and opened the cavern to visitors later that year.
The falls carry the name Ruby, which Leo Lambert chose to honor his wife when he opened the cave in 1928. Visitors today experience a guided journey through lit passages where they observe the limestone formations up close.
Tours take about 90 minutes and follow paved paths with handrails and electric lighting. The cavern maintains a steady temperature year-round, so comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended.
The waterfall flows regardless of rain or drought on the surface because it is fed by a spring system inside the mountain. The temperature inside stays at around 58 degrees Fahrenheit all year.
