Grandfather Mountain is a nature park on a peak rising 5,946 feet (1,812 meters) in Avery, Watauga, and Caldwell counties in North Carolina. Trails wind through rock formations and conifer forests, while platforms along steep slopes offer views over forested valleys.
The Morton family operated the mountain as a private park with animal enclosures and trails starting in 1952. North Carolina took over the land in 2008 and converted it into a state park, keeping the existing facilities in place.
The bridge sways in strong winds and takes its name from its elevation above sea level. Hikers experience different climate zones within a short distance, as vegetation changes visibly with increasing altitude.
Entry requires advance reservation, and the park opens daily except during extreme weather conditions. Trails can be slippery, and warm clothing is recommended, as temperatures at the summit are much cooler than in the valley.
The suspension bridge connects two peaks and was built in 1952 from steel cables and wooden planks. On windy days, the structure sways noticeably under visitors' feet.
