John Cuneo Sr., owner of a Chicago printing company, purchased the estate in 1937 from industrialist Samuel Insull. He initially transformed the property into a modern dairy farm before it later became a museum.

The collection reflects the international travels of the Cuneo family, with many pieces from Europe. Visitors can see how these objects fill the rooms and reveal the family's connections to distant places.
