The district contains twenty houses spread across Oakwood Avenue, Vine Avenue, and Green Bay Road, covering 13 acres of residential area.
Patrick Conlin built the first house in 1856, leading to the development of Lake Forest, with the eastern section platted by Jed Hotchkiss in 1857.

The district extends along three main streets near the Chicago and North Western Railways tracks, making it accessible for visitors interested in architectural history.
Wallis Simpson, who later became the Duchess of Windsor, lived at 494 Oakwood Avenue for one year during the district's early period.
