Devil's Backbone State Forest, State forest in Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States
Devil's Backbone State Forest covers rolling terrain with steep hillsides interrupted by rock outcrops and crossed by several streams. The vegetation varies across the land depending on slope and sun exposure, creating layers of different forest types.
The land supported iron furnaces from the 1700s through the Civil War era, when foundries used local ore and abundant timber. A tannery built in 1868 later processed tree bark, representing a shift in industrial use of the landscape.
The name refers to the dramatic ridge formation that dominates the landscape and served as a landmark in local history. Visitors can see today how the steep sides and distinctive rock formations give this forest its striking appearance.
A permit is required for visitors over 16 years old who want to hunt, fish, ride horses, or bike in the forest. Plan your visit during warmer months when the terrain is drier and easier to navigate on foot or bicycle.
The forest was specifically chosen to restore wild American chestnut trees, a species nearly wiped out by a fungal disease. This restoration work makes it an important site for forest science in the region.
