Dortch Plantation, Plantation house in Scott, Arkansas
Dortch Plantation is a two-and-a-half-story residence with ceilings about 14 feet high, a high hipped roof, and square brick columns topped with Ionic capitals. The house contains 30 rooms across roughly 11,000 square feet and now operates as a venue for weddings and celebrations.
The estate was established in the 19th century as a prosperous agricultural operation and expanded significantly. It was worked primarily for cotton and soybean crops, eventually supporting many farming families on the land.
The main house displays furnishings from before the Civil War, and each room features different pressed tin ceilings that reflect the craftsmanship of that era. These details allow visitors to experience the daily aesthetic and lifestyle of the wealthy owners.
The property is now open to the public mainly as an event venue, though private tours can sometimes be arranged. Check ahead on availability since the site may be closed during scheduled functions or celebrations.
The gardens were designed by local landscape architect P. Allen Smith, blending professional design with the natural surroundings. The grounds also preserve more than 20 original farm buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
