Dixie Square Mall, Enclosed shopping mall in Harvey, Illinois, US
Dixie Square Mall was an enclosed shopping center in Harvey, part of the southern Chicago suburbs, that housed several major department stores and dozens of smaller retailers under one roof. The complex spread across a single connected building with parking surrounding it and climate-controlled indoor corridors linking customers between storefronts.
The shopping center opened in November 1966, after Montgomery Ward had already opened its store there one year earlier. Following economic difficulties, it closed permanently in 1978 and remained abandoned until demolition in 2012.
During the grand opening celebrations, performers including Mel Torme, Carmelita Pope, and the Art Van Damme Quintet entertained visitors at the mall.
The building no longer exists, having been completely torn down and leaving only an empty lot behind. Visitors interested in the site's history can find references to the former center in the surrounding Harvey area.
A famous chase scene through the empty halls appeared in the 1979 film The Blues Brothers and shaped the building's public image. After that filming, the structure stood vacant for decades and visibly deteriorated.
