Eagle's Nest Art Colony, Art colony in Oregon, Illinois, US
Eagle's Nest Art Colony sits on bluffs above Rock River on the east bank, with views across the surrounding Illinois landscape. The site contains several artist buildings that form a residential community structure built for seasonal creative work.
The colony was founded in 1898 by sculptor Lorado Taft with eleven artists who initially lived in tents before building permanent summer residences. The site later became an educational campus operated by Northern Illinois University.
Artists at the colony gave free talks and demonstrations for local people, building connections between creative practice and everyday community life. These public exchanges shaped how art and artistic activity were understood in the region.
The site is now operated as the Lorado Taft Field Campus by Northern Illinois University and is open to visitors. Plan for uneven paths and bluff terrain when walking around the grounds.
The Black Hawk Statue, created by Lorado Taft at the colony, is a massive concrete sculpture that stands as one of the world's largest monolithic concrete monuments. Its towering form overlooks the river valley below.
