Edenville Dam, Embankment dam in Gladwin County, United States.
Edenville Dam is an embankment dam that spans across the Tittabawassee and Tobacco Rivers, creating Wixom Lake upstream. The structure was built in the early 1920s and served as a water management feature across the landscape for nearly a century.
Built in 1924 for power generation, it operated two turbines that supplied electricity to the region. Federal authorities revoked its operating license in 2018, ending its primary function after nearly a century.
The dam shaped local recreation for generations, as the lake behind it became a hub for fishing, boating, and community gatherings in the area. People spent weekends on its shores and used the water for leisure and social connection.
The site remains difficult to access as the structure and surrounding area are actively being rebuilt following the collapse. Visitors should expect restricted entry and ongoing construction work across the area.
Its collapse in 2020 ranks among the most destructive dam failures in recent American history, forcing the evacuation of entire communities downstream. The disaster triggered massive flooding that damaged thousands of homes across the valleys below.
