Ebenezer Baptist Churches

The Ebenezer Baptist Churches complex includes both an original stone meetinghouse and a later Greek Revival building constructed in distinct architectural periods.

The Baptist congregation first established their meetinghouse at this location in 1769, with the stone structure completed around 1806 and a second building added in 1855.

Local artist Lucien Whiting Powell enhanced the new church interior in 1876 with decorative tromp l'oeil designs that remain preserved within the structure.

The Ebenezer Cemetery Company maintains both church buildings and the surrounding cemetery grounds, which contain gravestones dating from the early 19th century.

The complex demonstrates the division between Old School and New School Baptists through its dual structures, reflecting theological changes in nineteenth-century American protestantism.
