Elms College, Catholic college in Massachusetts, U.S.
Elms College is a private Catholic college in Chicopee, Massachusetts, one of the smaller institutions of its kind in New England. The campus is made up mostly of brick buildings arranged around the Keating Quadrangle, a central green area that serves as a gathering point between classes.
The college was founded in 1928 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph as a school for women, under the name College of Our Lady of the Elms. In the late 1990s, it began admitting male students and adopted its shorter current name.
The college was founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, and that origin is still visible on campus today. Small chapels and gathering spaces show how religious values and academic life coexist in everyday routines.
The campus is small and easy to walk through, with most buildings close together. Many students commute, so parking areas are available around the grounds and access from outside is straightforward.
The name of the campus refers to the elm trees that once defined the grounds, even though few of those trees remain visible today. The name endured long after the trees themselves had largely disappeared from the landscape.
