Fenwick Island State Park, State park with Atlantic coastline in Delaware, United States

Fenwick Island State Park is a coastal state park in southern Delaware, running along an undeveloped stretch of Atlantic shoreline with protected dunes and salt marsh habitats. The park sits between the open ocean on one side and Little Assawoman Bay on the other, giving visitors access to two very different water environments.

A lifesaving station operated on this land in the late 1800s to assist victims of shipwrecks along this stretch of coast. During World War II, a fire observation tower was added for coastal defense, leaving the area with two distinct layers of history tied to the sea.

The beach draws swimmers, surfers, and families looking to spend time along the coast in a simple, open setting. Environmental education programs offered during the warmer months help visitors connect with the coastal landscape around them.

The park offers free beach wheelchairs, and there are marked sections where vehicles used for surf fishing are allowed on the sand. A bathhouse with changing rooms and a snack bar is available on-site, making a longer visit more comfortable.

Behind the sandy beach, salt-tolerant plants grow in marsh areas that attract bird species relying on wet, nutrient-rich ground. Many visitors who come expecting only open sand are surprised to find these very different habitats just a short walk from the water.
